The Certificat de Qualification Professionnelle “assistant maternel – garde d’enfants” is the first level 5 qualification (see French qualification system: level 5 is equivalent to a BEP/CAP) that recognizes childminders’ experience.
The certificate gets validated through the process of VAE (that is, the realization of a file and the viva introduction of it in front a professional jury) after receiving training of 21 hours in groups plus 3 individual hours that take place in a maximum of 3 months. This training is free and cannot be included in the 48 hours of plan de formation or the 120 hours of DIF.
The process to get the certificate:
A childminder can get the certificate of assistante materbelle / garde d’enfant through the VAE (Validation des Acquis et de l’Expérience) process after 5 successive steps:
Step 1: Eligibility
You must apply for your dossier de recevabilité (file to assess if you are eligible for the VAE) to the Institut Iperia (Organization in charge of the professionalization of family tasks employment, which assists employees and employers in the process of training) by telephone 0800 820 920 (communication is free if you call from a fix phone) or by mail. You can use the following sample of eligibility application letter.
Step 2: Assistance
Once you have received your eligibility file (around 15 days after application), SynAM-SPE Force Ouvrière recommends you to get assisted by a certified training organization to fulfill it. This assistance is free (if you are using your DIF hours).
Step 3: Eligibility and VAE file
Once you have completed your eligibility file and sent it to the Instutut Iperia, the file is referred to an eligibility commission which will analyze it and validate your application or not, depending on the current administrative and professional criterions. If the answer is positive, you will be able to start your VAE process.
Step 4: Realization of the file
Like for the eligibility, the SynAM-SPE Force Ouvrière recommends you to get assisted with your VAE file through free specific training called “accompagnement à la VAE” (assistance with VAE) given by the certified training organization of your choice. The assistance with VAE is organized in workshops that help you to gather certification of your skills (list of your professional experience, knowledge of the profession…). This file, which will be referred to the qualification jury, is the base for your final interview. The training takes place in 3 months and lasts 24 hours (21 hours in group workshops and 3 personal hours). This cannot be part of the maximum amount of 48 plan de formation hours or 120 DIF hours.
Step 5: Validating the certificate
Once your VAE file has been completed, it is sent by your training center to the jury which validates the qualification so that they analyze it. You will then be heard during 30 minutes, during which the jury (made up of of 3 persons: an employer, an employee and a State expert for qualification) will assess your skills and knowledge and provide you, after deliberating, your certificate of Assistant maternel/Garde d’enfant.
Partial validation of the qualification
If the jury partially validates your application, they will offer you to receive one or several training sessions (up to 80 hours in a year). When you are ready, 16 hours of assistance will help you to complete a new file, only regarding the part you had not validated. The training center will also enable you to introduce your file again in front of the jury so that you get your total qualification (please note that you must wait at least 6 months before applying again to the jury but not more than 5 years, otherwise you will have to start all the process from the beginning).
If you fail
You will still be able to continue working as a childminder and to develop your skills. If you wish, you will be allowed to apply again for the qualification in a maximum of 5 years after your first application.
